Proper End of Government.

One thing we all have in common is the desire for good government.  For us to achieve this desire, since in our form of government we select our leaders, we voters must first understand the proper role and purpose of government.  The proper “end” (i.e., purpose) of government is the “common good of the community governed.”  This cannot be properly understood until you consider what “good” a community can have “in common”.  Not every thing that is a “good” can be held or applied in common.

The resource on this is the teaching of the Church, the principles that endure, not the emotions and politics of the day. The principles are timeless; feelings and judgment on the circumstances of the day are not.

Take a look at our Hierarchy of Values page for more information on this.

I couldn’t disagree with you more! If we all get a similar payment of money then we all share in the goods of the community in the same way. That’s common!! Show me the money!

Ok. you’re not getting it. The money you get is not the same money that I get. It is two different portions. Those portions are not shared in common. What you are aiming at is socialist leveling of material goods, not the “common good.” Common goods are the kinds of goods of which all can share the same thing at the same time. Love can be shared by all at the same time and it is the same love for each. Money must be divided into individual portions. Those portions are not common at all.

The different between good government and bad government often comes down to whether the focus is on immaterial goods– justice, order, peace, etc.,– or on material goods, food, medical care, insurance money. Bad government creates class envy, greed and opportunities for corruption. Good government suppresses evil and promotes virtue or personal goodness, leaving the bulk of the work to the people.
